Systems of agricultural production Middle and Upper Egypt

Abstract It may be that Egypt is now seen as a country which is open to the rest of the world. Its geopolitical situation is well recognized, and Egypt’s role with respect to other Middle Eastern countries and African countries is as significant as her links with Europe. In the last two decades, out-migration of workers with its economic and social implications has become a noticeable feature of the country. Indeed, in recent years, remittances from Egyptians working abroad have often been the largest item of credit on the capital account of the balance of payments. Most of the migrant workers are from Middle and Upper Egypt, defined as the areas covered by the governorates of Giza, Beni Suef, Faiyum, and Minya (Middle Egypt) Asyut, Sohag, Qena, and Aswan (Upper Egypt) (Fig. 14.1).
