Abstract
Snow-clad hills around Walden echoed to the laughter of Frank Sanborn’s schoolchildren out for a skating party in January 1862. Julian Hawthorne was among them, and his sister Rose skated that day at Goose Pond. Sanborn loved Walden, having published poems to “Walden Woods” and “Walden Water.” “Edward and Mary and I rode down to Walden on the sled with James to find some skating,” Ellen Emerson wrote on the twenty-ninth, “But finding none went to Goose Pond, which was also covered with snow, so there was nothing for it but to trudge home again.
