Walras: a Hicksian avant la lettre

In light of the common view of Walras’ contribution to economic theory, Hicks is credited with the introduction of a method of dynamic economics that is based upon the temporary equilibrium concept and the prevalence of intertemporal uncertainty. However, a close reading or Walras’ Elements of Pure Economics results in a picture of Walras’notions closely related to the Hicksian view. In effect, Walras may be regarded as a Hicksian avant la lettre.
