ODRŽIVI RAZVOJ RIJEKE – EUROPSKE PRIJESTOLNICE KULTURE

The presented paper explores the European cultural project in Rijeka, as the first Croatian title of “European Capital of Culture”, implemented immediately before and during 2020 and completed according to the planned stages of implementation until today. In the previous period, this project included the renovation of historical buildings for new cultural purposes along with the implementation of a year-round cultural and artistic program. It is known that back in 1985, the original program of competition and titling of cities of culture by the European Commission began, which has reached a number of 60 or so to date. Among the selected cities, Rijeka has shown that it views culture as an important area of post-industrial growth and necessary modern transformation for the purpose of long-term urban development. Using the example of Rijeka, the selected and implemented project approach to the physical transformation of individual city central contextual areas near the sea with the relevant interventions in space will be presented. They were largely achieved through the concrete reconstruction construction of selected public buildings and spaces, financed mainly with European money.
