The article presents and analyses the development of the idea and tradition of ecological planning and design in town planning and landscape architecture, emphasizing the creative contributions of Patrick Geddes (1854–1932), Ian Lennox McHarg (1920–2001), John Ormsbee Simonds (1913–2005) and others to this field. The aspects of urban planning in harmony with nature, the scientific and methodical activities of these masterminds, which were and remain significant and relevant for the development of Lithuanian urban planning and landscape architecture, are analysed.
