Geddes, Patrick (1854–1932)

View through CrossRef
Patrick Geddes was a Scottish botanist and sociologist who constructed an ecological model of the relationship between the regional environment and the forms of social life that it sustains. He devised a systematic theory to explain the relationship between place, work, and people and used this to build a model of social change through the conflict between elites and subordinate classes. He depicted the need for a broadened and enlightened elite that would include sociologists and that would undertake planned social reconstruction on the basis of well‐founded sociological knowledge.
