Untitled (Big Sheep 4)

These two sculptures are figures of sheep. Or, more accurately: they can be recognised as sheep. They are very simple in execution: the concrete bodies have been cast in cardboard boxes, the spindly legs are made of iron rods with black paint suggesting hooves, while heads and tails have been drawn directly onto the sides in charcoal. Judith Hopf often uses a very restricted range of devices to create works infused by subtle humour. Hopf is interested in the imperfect, the awkward. She seeks, in a correspondingly back-to-front manner, to criticise the streamlined, standardised ideals that permeate our times, our lives and our relationships.
