Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli and Florence

Abstract Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli visited Florence repeatedly throughout his life, starting in childhood, when he accompanied his mother, Rosina Trivulzio (1800–1859). Drawing on a number of documented visits, such as one that took in the Italian National Exhibition of 1861 and another to the Dante celebrations of 1865, the aim of this essay is to examine Poldi Pezzoli’s relationship with the artistic environment, the collections and the important art market of Florence.
