Przemiany krajobrazu przestrzeni publicznych wsi podmiejskich Wrocławia

The transformations that are taking place in modern villages cause the old character of the rural landscape to disappear, and this particularly applies to suburban areas. One of their problems is the large increase in the number of inhabitants and new development, while at the same time there is a lack of adequate provision, and accessibility, of public spaces with positive effects on the landscape. The aim of the study is to determine the influence of the vicinity of a large city on the shaping of landscape of public spaces in peri-urban villages, to specify the trends, and then to develop a method for designating potential public spaces that can positively affect the landscape of villages. Nine municipalities neighbouring the city of Wrocław were selected for research purposes and subjected to general analyses. They were also the basis for selecting 100 statistical locations for detailed research. Their key stage was to analyse the potential of the spaces within the built-up areas of the villages for the creation of public spaces, in relation to population growth. In addition, the development of central squares in the villages included in the detailed studies was analysed from a landscape perspective. Finally, an original division of rural public spaces was made and a method for their designation (PoPP) was developed, which was pilot-tested on the example of the village of Psary located in the study area near the border with Wrocław. This village was selected because of its location within the proposed green infrastructure system in the Wrocław Functional Area (ZI WROF). What is more, this place is crucial for the system and at the same time under threat of degradation. The conclusions of the study indicate that nowadays public spaces in villages are in most cases shaped in a spontaneous way, mainly as fragmented individual actions. There is a definite lack of a holistic approach to their development, one that would treat the areas surrounding the village road, squares and larger recreational grounds as a coherent structure that enhances both the social, landscape and biodiversity values of a village. Such an approach is also important in the context of climate change adaptation and the creation of coherent green infrastructure systems.

Title: Przemiany krajobrazu przestrzeni publicznych wsi podmiejskich Wrocławia
