A lady (fl. 1688)

Abstract
Like The poem of’A Young Lady of Quality’ (no. 271) this may possibly be an early work of Delarivier Manley (nos. 275-7). It is interesting for its attestation of The immense importance of Aphra Behn as example and inspiration to oTher women, and also for its covert declaration of a shared political position—Aphra Behn’s response to The Glorious Revolution was to consider The rule of Queen Mary legitimated by her status as daughter of James II, and to ignore William III entirely: The ‘Lady’ commends her for this delicate balance of exigency and principle.
