A Welsh Plotter in 1688: Bishop Lloyd of St Asaph
View through CrossRef
The role of Bishop William Lloyd of St Asaph in the Revolution of 1688–9 has generally been seen as that of a mainstream Anglican bishop who sought unanimity with other churchmen in response to James II's policies. The argument presented here is that Lloyd's role needs thorough
re-evaluation because he was, in fact, a committed conspirator who actively plotted to be rid of James in 1688. In this account, Lloyd emerges both as a determined and committed conspirator and as one of the plotters of the Revolution of 1688. He also strongly promoted the Revolution in his
diocese.
