AbstractBraj B. (Behari) Kachru was born in Srinagar, Kashmir, India, in 1932. “Kachru,” by the way, is an Englishization of his name, which is from the Kashmiri wordkatsur, “brown.” His family are Pandits (from Sanskritpandit, “learnèd man, scholar”); that is, he is by heritage as well as by inclination a seeker after rational explanations and a willing instructor of willing students.
