This chapter provides an overview on how Tulio’s films have been received at different periods. Though never an unambiguous figure, in his early career Tulio was generally regarded as a welcome innovator within Finnish cinema. From the late 1940s on, critics had more and more mixed feelings about Tulio’s excessive and sensationalist melodramas. However, after hitting a low point in the 1960s and 1970s, Tulio’s critical reputation started gradually to rise again. This chapter charts the ups and downs of Tulio’s critical standing, from fame to oblivion and finally to an established cult figure
