Outsider as an Independent Filmmaker
View through CrossRef
This chapter discusses the modes of film production in Finland during the studio era. Most of Tulio’s films were made at a time when Finnish film trade was dominated by a few vertically integrated companies. Operating as an independent producer outside of these companies required imagination and inventiveness. Among Tulio’s survival tactics were the avoidance of large sets, use of amateur actors, as well as recycling of shots and music from his previous films. Furthermore, Tulio made both Finnish and Swedish language versions of most of his films, aiming to reach also the Scandinavian markets.
