Title: Strategy Drives Performance
Description:

Strategic management scholarship has, for decades, devoted disproportionate attention to the question of what strategy a firm should pursue and comparatively little to the question of how that strategy is actually carried out.
Surveys of executives conducted over the past three decades consistently report that a substantial majority of intended strategies are never fully realized, and that the primary cause of underperformance is not poor strategic thinking but poor strategic execution.
This book takes execution as its central subject.

The premise of this book is straightforward: performance is not a direct function of strategic insight but of the organization's capacity to translate insight into coordinated action.
A brilliant strategy poorly executed will underperform a mediocre strategy well executed, because performance is realized at the level of daily decisions, resource commitments, and behaviors, not at the level of the strategic plan itself.
Accordingly, this book treats execution not as an afterthought to strategy formulation but as a distinct managerial discipline with its own frameworks, tools, and body of evidence.
The chapters that follow are organized into four parts.
Part I establishes the conceptual foundations of execution, including why strategies fail and how formulation and implementation relate to one another.
Part II surveys the major frameworks that organizations use to translate strategy into action, including the Balanced Scorecard, objectives and key results systems, the McKinsey 7-S framework, resource allocation processes, and change management models.
Part III addresses the measurement, control, and governance mechanisms that sustain execution over time.
Part IV applies these frameworks through diagnostic tools and illustrative cases, and closes with a synthesis toward a more general theory of execution-driven performance.
This book is written primarily for students and scholars of strategic management who wish to move beyond strategy formulation into the equally demanding, and equally theorizable, domain of execution.
It assumes familiarity with basic strategic management concepts such as competitive advantage, the resource-based view, and 4 industry analysis, and builds from that foundation toward a more granular treatment of implementation.

A brief note on how the book is organized may assist readers with different purposes in approaching it.
Readers seeking a first, sequential introduction to the field of strategy execution should read Parts I through IV in order, as these establish the conceptual foundations, the principal frameworks, the governance and control mechanisms, and the diagnostic tools on which the remainder of the book builds.
Readers already familiar with the core frameworks who wish to explore specific organizational contexts, digital and platform businesses, agile methodologies, public and nonprofit organizations, family businesses, board governance, and cross-cultural execution, may proceed directly to Parts V through VII, each of which is written to be intelligible with reference back to the foundational chapters rather than requiring the intervening material to be read in full.
Practitioners returning to this book during an active execution initiative are directed to Part VIII, which consolidates the book's guidance into a condensed reference, and to the extended case in Part IX, which demonstrates the sequential application of the book's diagnostic and developmental tools to a single organizational situation from initial diagnosis through multi-year resolution.
