Adverbial Resumption and Scope: A Case Study of Norwegian

View through CrossRef
AbstractThis chapter deals with adverbial resumption in Norwegian, in particular based on data regarding the generalized resumptive marker så. Based on a detailed overview of verb second and adverbial resumption, including the question of whether or not the general resumptive marker så is a clitic, the chapter focuses on adverbial resumption and scope. Based on previous work on West Flemish which demonstrates that adverbial resumption restricts scope, it is shown that if Norwegian så is present, the fronted adverbial can only scope over the main clause verb. The chapter provides an analysis of the data in terms of phase theory, suggesting that så-resumption is restricted to movement within the same phase.
