EXPLORING URDHWAJATRUGATA VEDHYA SIRA BASED ON SIRA SHAREER

View through CrossRef
Background: The classical understanding of Sira Shareer distinguishes between Vedhya (puncturable) and Avedhya (non-puncturable) vessels based on their anatomical location, depth, proximity to vital structures, and potential complications. In the Urdhwajatrugata region, precise identification of suitable Vedhya Sira locations is crucial due to the presence of critical anatomical structures, including major blood vessels, lymphatic net-works, neural pathways, and Marma points. Contemporary Ayurvedic practice requires integration of this classi-cal anatomical wisdom with modern understanding to ensure safe and effective therapeutic interventions while maintaining the authenticity of traditional surgical principles. Present knowledge and gaps: Acharya Sushruta has stated Siravedhan as prime Chikitsa in Shalya Tantra. However, nowadays Siravedhan is rarely used in practice, possibly due to a lack of firsthand information, as it is challenging, effortful, and requires precision. In Sushrut Samhita Shareer Sthana chapter 7, Acharya Sushruta has stated that there are a total 164 Siras in Urdhwajatru region, in which a total of 50 Siras are Avedhya, and the positions of Avedhya Siras are pretty close to that of Vedhya Siras given in chapter 8, so it becomes essential to find out the anatomical structures to which one can label as Vedhya Sira. Material and methods: Conceptual study carried out by reviewing classical texts, contemporary science, jour-nals, and published research works. Conclusion: Siravedhan holds critical anatomical and surgical significance in Ayurvedic practice. Integration of traditional Sira Sharir concepts with modern anatomical knowledge enhances the safety and efficacy of blood-letting procedures in contemporary practice.
