A rural scene. In the foreground to the left a man milks a cow into a small pot or jug (handle not visible). In the foreground to the right is the rear view of a cow sitting down beside a fallen basket. Another recumbent cow and a grazing cow (rear view) are slightly to the right. More cattle enter the painting in the mid-distance to the left, stepping onto a curving, bridge-like construction that leads down to where the man is milking the cow. There are trees centre-right and a hill in the far distance.
