An Overview of the Medicinal and Nutritive Properties of Banana Peel

The present study aims to explore the medicinal and nutritive applications of banana peel. People usually waste or discard the banana peel due to a lack of awareness. Literature revealing banana peel's nutritional value and mineral content has been thoroughly studied. It depicts that banana peels are a rich source of many bioactive compounds such as carotenoids, biogenic amines, polyphenols, phytosterols, and antioxidants. It also contains minerals such as iron, calcium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, and good levels of dietary fiber. Antioxidants play a crucial role in removing toxins from the human body. The use of antioxidants present in banana peels can help reduce the risk of deadly diseases like cancer. Banana peel carries antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can be used in our daily lives as a first-aid at home to control, reduce, and cure inflammation and infections. One complete banana comprises about 30-40% peel, and the rest is the pulp portion. Literature reveals that banana peels are used in a wide range of industries such as cosmetics, medicine, food processing, beverages, textiles, energy resources, paper manufacture, bio-absorbents, biofuel production, and the agricultural sectors. An epic transformation in different industrial sectors can be seen because of the versatile nature of banana peel. Bananas are commonly available in our homes and thus can be known as a Zero-budget organic Cosmetic product.
