DANZIG (SCHULEMANN)

A new work detachment was established from Stutthof on July 11, 1941. Employment entries in prisoner files confirm the date that this subcamp opened.1 At the Stutthof camp, the labor supply announced recruitment for finishing work at Dr. Kurt Schulemann’s private obstetrics clinic being expanded at 23 Sandgrube Strasse (later Reverend Rogaczewski Ulica) in Danzig (later Gdańsk).2 According to Walerian Kilanowski’s account, 25 people signed up and were sent to Danzig that day.3 Another account states that Dr. Schulemann personally came to the Stutthof camp and picked prisoners for construction work in the commandant’s presence.4 The prisoners were quartered on the street side of the second floor of the building under construction. Guards from the Stutthof camp oversaw them; their role was limited to securing the premises where prisoners worked and preventing escapes.
