Abstract Between 1918 and 1933, Germany witnessed an uncompromising clash of ideologies and invented historical traditions. Ideological conflict translated into a fierce pseudo-historical and highly political fight for the ‘correct’ and universal interpretation of the German past. In the course of this battle over the past, the Bismarck myth proved to be one of the most powerful weapons employed by right-wing circles in their struggle against Weimar. The myth suggested that the Republic had been founded against the ‘spirit of Bismarck’ by those political groups which the Iron Chancellor himself had characterized as the ‘internal enemies of the Empire’. One of the prime intentions of the myth-makers was to associate the Weimar Republic with the odium of treason.
