Perceptions, interests, and understanding of Grade 8 students on Florante at Laura

This study was conducted to determine the level of perceptions, interests, and understanding of Florante at Laura among Grade 8 students of Ernesto R. Sicad Sr. National High School for the academic year 2024–2025. It also aimed to examine whether there are significant differences in the students’ perceptions, interests, and understanding of Florante at Laura. The study employed stratified random sampling. Out of the total population of ninety (90) Grade 8 students, the researcher selected seventy-three (73) participants using stratified random sampling with Taro Yamane’s formula. To measure the students’ level of perception of Florante at Laura, the researcher, with the assistance of the adviser, developed a forty-five (45)-item questionnaire. Another forty-five (45)-item questionnaire was constructed, with the help of the adviser, to determine the level of students’ interest in Florante at Laura. Meanwhile, a thirty (30)-item researcher-made test was administered to assess the students’ level of understanding of Florante at Laura. The data were analyzed using computer-processed statistics, including percentage mean, frequency count, standard deviation, ANOVA, and Pearson r. The alpha level was set at .05 for all inferential tests. Findings revealed that Grade 8 students demonstrated a “High” level of perception of Florante at Laura. Similarly, the level of interest in Florante at Laura was also “High.” However, the level of understanding of Florante at Laura was found to be “Moderate.” Moreover, results showed that there was “no significant difference” between the levels of perception and interest, and the level of understanding of Florante at Laura. Likewise, there was “no significant relationship” between perception and interest, as well as between perception and understanding. On the other hand, findings indicated a “significant relationship” between students’ level of interest and their level of understanding of Florante at Laura.
