Portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Headstone of the German poet. The head is reproduced almost head-on, the eyes look sharp on the left. The picture goes back to a template by Joseph Karl Stieler (1781-1858) from 1828. The painting template for printing is in Munich, Bavarian state painting collections in the Neue Pinakothek. The motif experienced a high degree of diffusion due to numerous reproductions of different kinds. The clear edge of the disk indicates a low-pressure technique, although the leaf comes from Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl (1804-1877), who emerged primarily as a lithographer.
