Development, Implementation and Effectiveness of a Computer Based Intervention for the Maladaptive Daydreaming
View through CrossRef
Maladaptive daydreaming involves vivid, prolonged fantasizing that interferes with goal attainment, relationships, and daily functioning. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a computer-based psychological intervention targeting maladaptive daydreaming. A total of 300 university students aged 18 to 30 were screened using the MDS-16. Forty individuals who met the clinical cutoff were randomly assigned to a treatment group or a control group. The intervention included Psychoeducation, mindfulness-based exposure and response prevention, stress coping strategies, Yoga, and social skills training. After one month, the MDS-16 was re-administered to both groups. Results showed a significant difference between groups (t = -8.45, df = 38, p = .000), with the treatment group exhibiting significantly lower MDS-16 scores than the control group. The findings suggest the intervention effectively reduced maladaptive daydreaming symptoms. Designed as a self-help program, this tool can support individuals with minimal therapist involvement and inform the development of future interventions targeting this condition.
