ACTIVITY OF WATER AND ETHANOL Syzygium myrtifolium Walp. AS ANTIBACTERIAL Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

View through CrossRef
Background: One of the pathological conditions that occurs in the mouth and affects periodontaltissue or tooth supports is periodontitis. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans has the potentialto trigger periodontal disease if allowed to persist, proliferate and express virulence factors. Thepharmacological activity of Syzygium myrtifolium based on the solvent extract involves severalfunctions, one of which is as an antibacterial agent. This research aims to determine the activity ofwater and ethanol extracts of Syzygium myrtifolium Walp. in inhibiting the growth of Aggregatibacteractinomycetemcomitans bacteria. Objective: This research aims to determine the activity of waterand ethanol extracts of Syzygium myrtifolium Walp. 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% in inhibiting the growthof Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria. Method: Research is laboratory experimental.Ethanol extract of Syzygium myrtifolium Walp. partitioned to obtain water extract of Syzygiummyrtifolium Walp. . The antibacterial test was carried out using the disc diffusion method on MuellerHinton Agar (MHA) media with 4 sample repetitions. Metronidazole 50 µg was used as a positivecontrol and DMSO 2% was used as a negative control. Results: The average inhibition zone of theethanol extract was 9.11 mm, 11.475 mm, 13.625 mm, and 15.2875 mm, respectively, while thewater extract was 10.3125 mm, 13.25 mm, 14.725 mm, and 16.725 mm, respectively. positive control22.975 mm and negative control 0 mm. Conclusion: Water and methanol extracts of Syzygiummyrtifolium Walp. have antibacterial activity against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.
