Measuring Championship Venue Difficulty in U.S. Open Golf

View through CrossRef
Conventional assessments of U.S. Open venue difficulty — winning score or raw field scoring average versus par — are confounded by USGA setup decisions, weather variation, field strength, and equipment technology. This paper proposes adjusted field scoring average (FSA+/−), anchored to eraspecific field quality, as the primary difficulty measure, and introduces formal inferential testing to validate a four-tier venue classification. Welch's two-sample t-test confirms high-difficulty venues (Tier 1+2) produce significantly higher FSA+/− than lower-difficulty venues: t(14.0) = 3.228, p = 0.0061, Cohen's d = 1.508. One-way ANOVA confirms the four-tier framework is highly significant: F(3,12) = 11.845, p = 0.0007, η² = 0.748. The 2021 U.S. Amateur at Oakmont — 5.47 strokes harder than its co-host on the same day with no Open setup (t ≈ 9.851, p < 0.0001, d ≈ 1.577) — provides causal evidence that Oakmont's difficulty is architectural. In the modern era, Merion 2013 (+4.55) is the hardest Open by adjusted field average. A statistically validated four-tier venue classification is presented.

Open venue difficulty — winning score or raw field scoring average versus par — are confounded by USGA setup decisions, weather variation, field strength, and equipment technology.
This paper proposes adjusted field scoring average (FSA+/−), anchored to eraspecific field quality, as the primary difficulty measure, and introduces formal inferential testing to validate a four-tier venue classification.
Welch's two-sample t-test confirms high-difficulty venues (Tier 1+2) produce significantly higher FSA+/− than lower-difficulty venues: t(14.
0) = 3.
228, p = 0.
0061, Cohen's d = 1.
508.
One-way ANOVA confirms the four-tier framework is highly significant: F(3,12) = 11.
845, p = 0.
0007, η² = 0.
748.
The 2021 U.
S.
Amateur at Oakmont — 5.
47 strokes harder than its co-host on the same day with no Open setup (t ≈ 9.
851, p < 0.
0001, d ≈ 1.
577) — provides causal evidence that Oakmont's difficulty is architectural.
In the modern era, Merion 2013 (+4.
55) is the hardest Open by adjusted field average.
A statistically validated four-tier venue classification is presented.
