Measuring Venue Difficulty in The Open Championship

<div> <span>Conventional assessments of championship golf venue difficulty — winning score and raw field scoring average — conflate course architecture with weather, organizer setup, and player population. This study compiled field scoring average versus par (FSA+/−) for all sixteen Open Championships contested between 2010 and 2026 and cross-validated the resulting venue classification against four independent datasets spanning four player populations: per-course scoring from the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship three course rotation (2021–2025), Amateur Championship co-hosted stroke play qualifying, AIG Women's Open cut scores at eight shared venues, and ERA5 reanalysis wind and precipitation for all 65 championship days.&nbsp;</span> </div> <div> </div> <div> <span>Welch's t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and pooled and venue fixed-effects regressions were applied. High-difficulty venues produced significantly higher FSA+/− than lower-difficulty venues (t(11.8) = 3.31, p = 0.006, d = 1.52), and ANOVA validated a four-tier framework (F(3,12) = 4.12, p = 0.032, η² = 0.507). Carnoustie played a mean 1.85 strokes harder than the Old Course across five same-field Dunhill editions (t(4) = 9.00, p &lt; 0.001), causal evidence that its difficulty is architectural. Mean championship wind raised&nbsp;</span><span>explained variance from R² = 0.507 to 0.786, with a within-venue effect of +0.30 strokes per mile per hour (p = 0.023) confirmed out-of-sample at the 2026 championship. Elite fields beat the scratch-golfer Course Rating expectation by a mean of 3.42 strokes, and venue rankings varied systematically across populations: St Andrews was the least difficult venue for elite men yet mid-range for elite women. Championship venue difficulty is therefore measurable, reproducible, and separable into architectural and weather-financed components, and is population-relative rather than an absolute property of a course. The findings bear on equipment rollback policy, venue selection, and course architecture.</span> </div>
