Abstract
FEW consuls had the good fortune vouchsafed to L. Domitius Apollinaris in knowing two authors, both of whom wrote with proper care for posterity. Martial honoured him with no fewer than six epigrams, and he received two letters from Pliny. In another, Apollinaris is styled ‘consul designatus’. That was his rank in the year 97 when the ambitious orator launched his memorable attack on a fellow senator, in vengeance for the fate of Helvidius Priscus. Apollinaris had returned to Rome, from the governorship of Lycia-Pamphylia.
