XIX CENTURY EASTERN ARMENIAN DRAMATURGY

In Eastern Armenian reality, a lasting value of dramaturgy was created through the initiative of Gabriel Sundukian. He became one of the first and most prominent representatives of Armenian classical realism, laying the groundwork for the further development and achievements of literature. The works of Sundukian stand out for their high artistic quality, sense of proportion, and precise and appropriate use of language. The aim of the article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of Gabriel Sundukyan's influence on Armenian drama, highlighting his role in the development of Armenian classical realism and Armenian dramaturgy. The article emphasizes Sundukyan's departure from historical tragedies and his focus on social issues, illustrating his pivotal role in shaping Armenian drama and advancing its realistic and moralistic elements.  Furthermore, the article places Sundukyan's contributions within the broader context of Armenian theatre, comparing his works with those of his contemporaries and predecessors, such as Armenian students from Moscow University and other playwrights. It also discusses the evolution of Armenian comedy and drama, showing how Sundukyan's works transitioned from earlier forms of vaudeville to more complex and realistic portrayals of social and familial dynamics.
