Astonishing Artists

This chapter complements Chapter 2 by offering a parallel analysis of Misty ’s artistic production. It explains the background to the use of Spanish artists in British comics, and the links between the three main Spanish art studios: Selecciones Illustrades, CreacionesEditorales and Bardon Art. It explores the process of designing and printing Misty , drawing on exclusive interviews with its art editorial team of Jack Cunningham and Ted Andrews. The chapter identifies the numerous international artists who contributed to Misty– a significant feat as the stories were uncredited. It gives brief biographical summaries of the most popular, such as Mario Capaldi and John Armstrong, along with analysis of their style and work. It concludes by reflecting on how which Misty ’s aesthetic and its covers by Shirley Bellwood were edited and manipulated to support an image that was appropriate for a young female audience, such as its use of the image of the new age witch.
