Tradition, Authority, and Resistance: A Critical Study of Sayyed Women's Marriage in Cikoang Village, Takalar Regency

The marriage tradition of the Sayyed community in Cikoang Village, Takalar Regency, represents a socio-religious practice aimed at preserving lineage and family honor. In practice, this system places Sayyed women in a constrained position regarding marital choice through the strict application of the concept of kafa’ah. This study aimed to critically analyze the relationship between tradition, religious and customary authority, and forms of resistance among Sayyed women within the marriage system. This research employed a qualitative case study approach through literature review and analysis of relevant academic works. The findings indicated that customary and religious authorities play a dominant role in maintaining endogamous marriage practices, while Sayyed women often experience limited autonomy. Nevertheless, symbolic and practical forms of resistance have emerged, particularly among younger generations, signaling shifts in values toward marriage. This study contributes to Islamic family law discourse by highlighting tensions between tradition, women’s rights, and contemporary social change.
