Jupiter falls in love with Callisto, a favourite companion of the goddess Diana. Disguised as Diana, he approaches the unsuspecting young woman and seduces her. When Diana and her nymphs go bathing, Diana discovers Callisto’s pregnancy and casts her out. The tragic ending is depicted on the second medallion: Juno, Jupiter’s jealous spouse, transforms Callisto into a bear.
