The ship that became barge!
The bark ship “Diana” was built in Bergkvara in 1858 on behalf of Consul Per Edvard Kreuger. She received three masts and was rigged as a bark ship. The length was 38.5 m and the width was 8.10 m. She had a gestation of 285 Tons. The first place was Kalmar.
In 1871 “Diana” came to Bohuslän. The fish brook became a place of residence. The main shipowner was Amadeus Bengtsson, “estimated from near Morlanda parish of Ave Orust and Bohus County.” Other shipowners (party shipowners) came from Fiskeövriga skil, Kristineberg, Gåsö, Bassholmen and Gothenburg.
Commanders at “Diana” became the skipper Edward Bengtsson, who had passed the sea captain exam. At the end of the 1870s, the master of the sea captain Hans Andersson from Gåsö was on “Diana,” which he continues to be for twenty years!
The main shipowner passes in 1882 to Anton from FiskeHuvudskil.
After the death of Anton Nilsson, the naval captain Jonas Bengtsson takes over the main ship in March 1883. In 1896, Amanda Olsson from Fiske1896 skil becomes the principal editor. New commander at “Diana” becomes Anders Karlsson from Gåsö.
“Diana sails for 33 years with Fiske” skil as a home port. As a master at“Diana,”for many years sea captains from Gåsö were appointed.
The party owners switch to numbers and parts in the party shipping company change owners. At some point there are over 40 people from Fiskebäckskil, Grundsund, Gothenburg, Sälvik, Grönskult, Backa, Gåsö and bassholmen who are the owners of “Diana.” Some widows take over the party leadership after the men’s death.
“Diana” is a ship, with which several families got involved and at the end of “Diana’s” sailing time, there are co-owners, who were involved when she came to Fiske" skil in 1871.
Steam-powered ships took more and more of the freight market. The sailing ships were generally not profitable at the turn of the century on the Transoceana trades. “Diana” finally became a problem for the owners and the only thing left was to change “Diana” to the barge. It was not a particularly ferocious end for a proud ship, which, without major breakdowns, sailed on the world’s oceans for nearly 50 years!
On 10 March 1904, Amandus Olsson, the ship’s principal shipowner, reports the following: “The ship’s register hereby declares that the bark-ship” Diana “entered in the register no 909 changed to barge as a non-reciprocal engine.”
