The Speeches of Apollodoros I: Authorship
View through CrossRef
Abstract
The authorship of the speeches delivered by Apollodoros is a topic which has generated considerable scholarly discussion. A complete solution to the problem would require us to provide answers to the following three separate questions. First, how many of the speeches are correctly attributed to Demosthenes and how many are spurious? Second, are the spurious speeches the work of a single author? Third, if these speeches were written by one man, can we identify him? In this chapter a variety of criteria will be applied in an attempt to produce a definitive answer to these questions. We shall consider not only the speeches which Apollodoros certainly delivered (45, 46, 49, 50, 52, 5 3, 59), but also those which have been associated with them on grounds either of style (47) or of content (51). Before examining the evidence, we should consider briefly the views of earlier scholars.
