Portrait Carolina, Princess, later Queen of England (1683-1737)

Portrait of Princess Caroline. Born Markgräfin of Brandenburg-Ansbach was queen of Great Britain and Ireland and elector of Hanover by marrying George II in 1727. She is also considered one of the biggest patrons of Georg Friedrich Händel, who created a Funeral Anthem for her on behalf of George II on the occasion of her funeral ceremonies. Here you can see the princess as a chest image facing to the right in the three-quarter profile, the head turned slightly to the right, the eyes directed directly at the viewer. She wears a precious dress with jewelry buckles, the hair is raised and decorated with pearl necklaces. The effigy is adorned as an upper end by an oval frame with a cartouche of a crown in which three feathers are inserted. At the bottom of the frame there is another cartouche with inscription and adorning palm petals. On the volutes of the cartouche are draftsmen and steers immortalized with dating. The Händel-Haus Foundation has a second variant to the engraving here: BS-III 23a. This variant is smaller and shows the same portrait, only the framework program changes in this paper. The British Museum in London has a specimen and a specimen of the paper. The National Portrait Gallery in London, in turn, has specimens of the present and the accompanying variant. Signature: G.
