Pocket case of English Drawing instruments

small case covered in shagreen containg tightly packed drawing instruments, known as a 6-inch English Drawing set; The case design wasvery popular and was to endure for almost a century. Now dubbed etuis, they were originally called pocket magazine cases and were made in two sizes, 6-inch sets and 4½-inch sets. The latter, according to William Ford Stanley, were used entirely by architects and civil-engineers and the 6-inch sets by mechanical engineers. The bows of a 6-inch set were only 3 inches long, but they were still called 6-inch bows.
