Discussions between Wittgenstein, Anscombe, and Hijab, 1946–1947

Abstract Wittgenstein, Anscombe, and Wasfi Hijab met for philosophical discussions in 1946–1947. Anscombe kept a record of some of these meetings; she would write up her notes afterwards while the meetings were fresh in her mind, with each person represented by their name or initials, as in a play. They are dated 4 December 1946, 10 December 1946, and 21 January 1947. The main contributors are Wittgenstein and Anscombe, with only occasional contributions from Hijab. The topics covered were ones that Wittgenstein was thinking hard about at the time and which are central to his later philosophy. They include: colours, alternative concept-schemes, rule-following, the logical ‘must’, and indefiniteness.
