De Materie is een iconisch werk van de Nederlandse componist Louis Andriessen. Radicaal niet-narratief van opzet, snijdt het in vier statische taferelen onderwerpen aan die variëren van 17de-eeuwse scheepsbouw, over atoomtheorie, de mystieke poëzie van Hadewijch tot Piet Mondriaan. De muziek verzoent strakke repetitieve processen uit de minimal music met Stravinskiaanse akkoorden, sensuele spiritualiteit en zelfs een exuberante boogiewoogie . Deze operagids bespreekt de muzikale vormgeving van het werk en situeert Andriessens esthetiek aan de hand van onder meer zijn engagement met politieke actie, het belang van conceptualisme en muzikale abstractie. Tot slot kadert Maarten Beirens de opera in de laat-20ste eeuwse ritualistische theateresthetiek van de oorspronkelijke regisseur Robert Wilson.
