The Revolt of 1857 in Lucknow

The concerned Research Paper is written on the topic - ‘The Revolt of 1857 in Lucknow Causes and Consequences,’ the paper begins with a general introduction and a gist of events that took place which led to the involvement of Lucknow in the revolt. The uprising began in Meerut on 10th May,1857, due to various reasons such as abolition of Sati, Doctrine of Lapse, General enlistment regulations and other causes while the immediate cause that ignited the revolt was the rumor of greased cartridges. In Lucknow the revolt began on 30th May,1857 ; the paper covers the causes with regard to Lucknow i.e., Treaty of Allahabad, Subsidiary Alliance, Doctrine of Lapse, Annexation of Awadh, Mahalwari system and Taluqdars then it moves to the Revolt and all the events that happened in Lucknow since the beginning of fortification of Residency and Machibhawan covering the famous battles of Chinhut, Alambagh, Sikander Bagh, Moosabagh etc. Contribution of Begum Hazrat Mahal is mentioned from the beginning till the end. The siege and relief are elaborated giving a vivid depiction of Sir Outram’s letter to Sir Colin through Henry Kavanagh. Last but not the least the consequences are highlighted at the end such as the Government of India Act 1858, escape of Begum Hazrat Mahal, practice of Indentured labor and other acts that were passed. The research paper covers all the events in a clear and crisp manner which gives a complete idea of Lucknow during the Revolt of 1857 to the readers.
