Socio-economic Status of Chikan workers of Lucknow

Lucknow is also known the world over for its many fine handicrafts. Some of the most popular names in this list are Chikankari, Zari Zardozi, Hand Block Textile Printing and many others that are practiced by various artisans of Lucknow. Chikankari is considered to be the most popular amongst these and is recognized worldwide. Lucknow's Chikankari (embroidery) is synonymous with the city's heritage. This is a delicate and intricate shadow work type of embroidery practiced mainly by the skilled craftsman of Lucknow. Chikankari also brings Hindu and Muslim religion together and also it is a medium were they get in touch with each other and share their cultural values. Today, it is mainly in the hands of women and is still a significant Industry in Lucknow. These women have low economic status and which forces them to work in this home based industry. The pauperisation of women workers prevails and because of their illiteracy and social conditions. The present paper focuses on socio-economic status of these chikan workers.
