Ivan Bunin’s Early Fiction of 1894–1906 in the Emigrant Publications

The article examines the early stories of Ivan Bunin (1894–1906), published by the author in various emigrant editions. All publications of each story are provided with statistics. Bunin’s attitude to his early fiction is studied. The composition of the prose section of Bunin’s “Primal Love” collection (Prague, 1921) is analyzed. Each early story published in emigration is examined, the main discrepancies in the texts are given in comparison with the Complete Works edition of Bunin (Petrograd, 1915) it being the last main pre-revolutionary publication for all the works mentioned, as well as the discrepancies between emigrant publications of a particular story. The nature of the author's edits made while preparing the “Primal Love” collection for publication and in later emigrant early stories publications is considered. The difference between Bunin’s approach to the publication of his early stories in the “Primal Love” collection and in later publications of these stories in the emigrant periodicals is emphasized.
