Der Aufsatz betrachtet die Illustrationen, die der englische Künstler Tom Phillips (1937–2022) für Dantes Inferno angefertigt hat, das er auch übersetzt hat. Die Analyse zeigt die Bedeutung der allegorischen Wiederverwendung von Bildern und Materialien, die bereits in der Tradition vorhanden sind, gemäß einer ‘postmodernen’ Vorgehensweise, die hier jedoch durch eine sorgfältige Interpretation von Dantes Text untermauert wird. Auf diese Weise erhält man wirklich originelle Interpretationen der verschiedenen dargestellten Gesänge
