From Buffon to Danton: "Man Himself and Individual Cases
Danton, stealing a phrase from Buffon, considered the Revolution to deal only in species, not individuals; yet Danton, like Mirabeau, had a highly individual style, in a period of political cant. Another remark of Buffon' s — "style is Man Himself — clarifies things: for style for Buffon is like the unity of Nature, which produces multiplicities of individual species.
