Abstract Michael Oakeshott was born on December 11, 1901 in Chelsfield, Kent, England. He studied history and the great works of philosophy, especially political philosophy. He was never a political activist. He insisted on the special vocation of the philosopher to examine critically and disinterestedly the assumptions or postulates underlying the various distinctive modes of human activity. To examine politics philosophically was of central interest to him. Oakeshott thought of philosophy as a commitment to the open‐endedness of thought, to radically subversive questioning.
