Ce texte parle de deux amitiés et de deux livres. Disparus presque en même temps en 2022 Elihu Katz et Todd Gitlin étaient tous deux mes amis, mais aussi des adversaires résolus, les partenaires d’un débat qui a longtemps clivé la sociologie des médias. Les deux livres sont Personal Influence (en français : Influence personnelle) écrit par Elihu Katz et Paul Lazarsfeld et Media Events (en français : La Télévision cérémonielle), écrit presque 40 ans plus tard par moi-même et Elihu Katz. En combinant témoignage direct et analyse critique, je propose ici une relecture de ces deux livres et de leurs généalogies respectives, qui renvoient au post-structuralisme français et à la théologie juive.
