Motivational Interviewing

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter focuses on the theoretical foundations of motivational interviewing, its style, spirit, tasks, skills, and strategies as well as its applications in clinical settings and with specific populations. The chapter starts the conversation about how motivational interviewing and mindfulness are useful to empower patients to autonomously self-regulate, to ignite their motivation for behavioral change, and to embark on a journey of the meaningfulness of life and growth. The central aim of motivational interviewing is to facilitate evoking patients’ own motivation for and commitment to follow through. The chapter discusses the relational and technical components of motivational interviewing. Motivational interviewing is not a set of techniques and strategies. It is a clinical presence utilizing a person-centered approach and complex skills to facilitate change.
