In this article, Charles Stephens and Steven G. Fullwood, coeditors of Black Gay Genius: Answering Joseph Beam’s Call, converse with one another about the influence of womanism on the evolution of Black gay and bisexual men’s political consciousness, cultural and political activism, and community mobilization. As they note, such influence is evident in anthologies such as Joseph Beam’s In the Life and films such as Marlon Rigg’s Black Is … Black Ain’t. This dialogue, which also discusses the influence of Black lesbian feminism, offers insight and perspective around the complex ways Black gay and bisexual men have grappled with gender justice, especially since the 1980s. These authors discuss notable figures, institutions, actions, and key writings influenced by womanism to offer a fuller picture of movement history.
