Abstract
The purpose of this book is to present the concepts and methods of epidemiology as they are applied to a variety of health problems. The broad scope of epidemiology is liberally illustrated with studies of specific diseases. Emphasis is placed on the integration of biological and statistical elements in the sequence of epidemiologic reasoning that derives inferences about the etiology of disease from population data. The epidemiologist’s role in integrating knowledge obtained from a variety of scientific disciplines is described.
