Abstract
The famine in Darfur became most visible to outsiders during the first half of 1985. Journalists began to visit Darfur, and relief agencies began their operations (although there was to be no sign of major UN agencies such as UNICEF and World Food Programme for many months). Aid agency officials, journalists, politicians, and other sundry disaster tourists flocked to Darfur. Disaster tourism reached its peak shortly after the EEC relief programme launched an airlift of grain in May 1985, making it possible to visit Darfur with relative ease.
