Optimal Cost of Production of Bioethanol: A Review

View through CrossRef
With the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels, biofuels have gained a lot of attention, with bioethanol having a significant positive effect on the environment and ensuring a promising future. Bioethanol cost of production has roughly been estimated to be 0.5USD/liter for first-generation bioethanol and 1 USD/liter for lignocellulosic bioethanol, with the USA and Brazil leading in global production chat. These prices must have doubled with the current economic inflation the world is facing. Optimal production of bioethanol from either generation is the current focus, while bioethanol from genetic modification of enzymes and algae is explored. The ethanol yield from sugar and starch feedstocks (first generation) is lucrative and easier than Lignocellulosic biomass, but the first generation competes with food availability, which leads to hunger, thereby creating more problems. Processes that are cost-effective and environmentally friendly in the production of bioethanol are discussed.
